Matthew Ten Thirty-Six

2012

Neoliberal enslavement is a tool
To destroy both wise man and fool
And yet
What burden incurs to him?
Is it lip service paid?
Truth to tell them
Of the honest and the good waylaid
Or just lies to quell them?
The many love gold more than their country
Their careers more than their dignity
Their affairs run parallel with silent infamy
And the few
Or the one
Who wouldn’t surrender or run?
What is to be done with his sin
That he didn’t give in?
More the loser-job loser him
And yet
Nearest to God opposite his landing place
Reminds them
Go in and try to find them
The station’s walls are all bare
His crosses are not there
Nor his brother’s namesake
Make no mistake
Or much to-do about something
Send the foolish, honest man suffering
Home
To ease his burden in scripture and poem
